Allynn Riggs, author of The Blood and The Balance, first two works in The Stone’s Blade series

Allynn Riggs, author of The Blood and The Balance, the first two works in The Stone’s Blade series, converses with Jerry Fabyanic on Writers Talk about the genesis, characters, and the story’s development.

About the Work: This epic space opera continues the adventures of self-discovery begun in The Blood. Still struggling with her new identity as the Singer for the alien Anyala Stone, Ani returns to her home world to fulfill her promise to find the person known as The Balance, the only one who can save the Anyala Stone. Together with Kela and Renloret, Ani enlists the help of Taryn, the Sheriff of Star Valley, to sift through twenty-five years of lies and secrets on their search. A journal written by her mother holds an important clue and as Renloret and Ani discover the identity of The Balance, Taryn disappears while investigating a suspicious scientist bent on revenge against Ani’s uncle. While Ani’s sense of identity continues to change she must figure out a way to save her best friend and the life of the crystalline alien Stone. All of this complicates and further delays the romance developing between Renloret and Ani. What will happen to the prophecy if the Anyala Stone dies before The Balance can be found and returned to Lrakira? What more does the prophecy hold for the people of Lrakira and Teramar?

About the Author: Allynn Riggs has been writing stories since she played in sand boxes with her plastic horses and after being nagged and cajoled by a determined collection of fictional characters for many years, she surrendered and shifted careers to tell their stories. Her science fiction series, “The Stone’s Blade”, began innocently enough as a short story written when she was fourteen. The characters of Ani, Kela, Taryn, and Renloret have never left her imagination or dreams and waited patiently until she was ready to share their worlds with you. Don’t let anyone tell you it is too late to get started writing. Begin, now.

For now, her heart and soul is focused on her first science fiction/fantasy series. Allynn reads a lot of fantasy and science fiction, though not as much as she’d like to, and is currently reacquainting herself with authors she has enjoyed from the 1970’s up to present day. These authors include Andre Norton, Anne McCaffrey, Robert Heinlein, Frank Herbert, Mercedes Lackey, and many others. She believes that violence or cruelty does not make a story and often puts down books that seem to emphasize gruesomeness over a good story arch with well-drawn, believable characters. Allynn hopes readers will find such characters in “The Stone’s Blade” series.

Also published in magazines and newsletters for more than twenty years, Allynn’s award winning short story, “Pumpkin Party”, was selected as one of the best stories in 2008 in the children’s e-magazine, “Stories for Children”. Other interests that consume almost as much time as writing and reading include participating in and teaching square and round dancing with her husband, Bob, big game hunting, quilting, and occasionally gardening. The mother of three grown daughters, Allynn resides in Centennial, Colorado, with her husband Bob.

Awards: The Blood was awarded 3rd Place in Science Fiction and 3rd Place in Fantasy in the Colorado Independent Publishers Association’s EVVY Awards in August 2014. The cover design also received a merit award. The Balance was awarded 2nd Place in Science Fiction in the 2017 Colorado Independent Publishers Association’s EVVY Awards.
