Adult Fiction Writers Talk Podcast

Allynn Riggs, author of The Blood and The Balance, first two works in The Stone’s Blade series

Allynn Riggs, author of The Blood and The Balance, the first two works in The Stone’s Blade series, converses with  Writers Talk host Jerry Fabyanic about the genesis, characters, and the story’s development.

About the Work: The women of Lrakira have begun to die and the Stones have chosen Renloret to rescue Lrakira’s only hope of survival, a five-year-old child living on Teramar. When his ship crashes on Teramar, Renloret races against time to find the child whose blood carries the cure for his people. But the child cannot be found and to complicate matters, Renloret is falling in love with the woman, Ani, who rescued him from his crash. Ani is the first female blade ring champion on Teramar’s northern continent and has a few issues of her own. Even with Ani’s help will Renloret be able to find the prophesied child known as The Blood? Will he find a way to get the child to Lrakira in time to save his people from extinction? The future of two worlds, Lrakira and Teramar, hang in the balance and everything depends on Renloret.

The Balance is an exciting continuation of the characters’ self-discovery, adventures beyond their imaginations and how accepting of change they and their societies are. Will Ani accept her new identity and be able to find The Balance? Will The Balance be able to save the Anyala Stone? What else will the prophecies within the first song of the Stones bring to the people of Lrakira and Teramar? Will they destroy or unite both worlds?

About the Author: Allynn Riggs has been writing stories since she played in sand boxes with her plastic horses and after being nagged and cajoled by a determined collection of fictional characters for many years, she surrendered and shifted careers to tell their stories. Her science fiction series, “The Stone’s Blade”, began innocently enough as a short story written when she was fourteen. The characters of Ani, Kela, Taryn, and Renloret have never left her imagination or dreams and waited patiently until she was ready to share their worlds with you. Don’t let anyone tell you it is too late to get started writing. Begin, now.

For now, her heart and soul is focused on her first science fiction/fantasy series. Allynn reads a lot of fantasy and science fiction, though not as much as she’d like to, and is currently reacquainting herself with authors she has enjoyed from the 1970’s up to present day. These authors include Andre Norton, Anne McCaffrey, Robert Heinlein, Frank Herbert, Mercedes Lackey, and many others. She believes that violence or cruelty does not make a story and often puts down books that seem to emphasize gruesomeness over a good story arch with well-drawn, believable characters. Allynn hopes readers will find such characters in “The Stone’s Blade” series.

Also published in magazines and newsletters for more than twenty years, Allynn’s award winning short story, “Pumpkin Party”, was selected as one of the best stories in 2008 in the children’s e-magazine, “Stories for Children”. Other interests that consume almost as much time as writing and reading include participating in and teaching square and round dancing with her husband, Bob, big game hunting, quilting, and occasionally gardening. The mother of three grown daughters, Allynn resides in Centennial, Colorado, with her husband Bob.

Awards: The Blood was awarded 3rd Place in Science Fiction and 3rd Place in Fantasy in the Colorado Independent Publishers Association’s EVVY Awards in August 2014. The cover design also received a merit award.  The Balance was awarded 2nd Place in Science Fiction in the 2017 Colorado Independent Publishers Association’s EVVY Awards.

“The engaging story reminds me of Anne McCaffrey’s interplanetary books . . .Crystals, swords, and a potential cure are a heady mix in this space fantasy. – Clare O’Beara, Dublin, Ireland, for Fresh Review. Read the full review on Fresh Review

“I love crossover genre fiction, and Allynn Riggs’ new SF/Fantasy delivers in both catagories. Through a satisfying read that’s well thought out, well-paced, and strongly character-driven, the tale combines the best of space opera with an intriguing paranormal twist that has the feel of a whole fantasy epic. That’s a good thing for us, since this is the first book in a very promising series. Sure to find an enthusiastic audience.” – Dr. Mark Todd, program director of Western State Colorado University’s MFA in Creative Writing and author of SF and fantasy, including the award-winning Silverville Saga series.

“If you’re looking for alien romance, telepathic talking dogs, and other-worldly culture/religion, this story delivers . . . along with a few unexpected twists.” – Terry Wright, author, editor, publisher.
